Guided Discovery Using Socratic Dialogue

© Copyright 1996 Christine A. Padesky, PhD / www.padesky.com

Dr. Padesky teaches the four stages of Socratic dialogue with three different clients:

  • depressed

  • anxious

  • angry

Watch how she uses demonstrates the four stages to help clients uncover and re-evaluate key automatic thoughts:

  1. informational questions

  2. empathic listening

  3. summaries

  4. analytic / synthesizing questions

Her use of the Socratic process uncovers cognitions characteristic of each mood state.

Viewers comment that learning these four stages helps to demystify Socratic questioning.

Learn how to guide the client's discovery instead of trying to change the client's mind.

In general I thought the vignettes were fantastic and helpful. I was, however, kind of shocked to say the least at how short the video was. I would have expected more for $29.99 and regret spending the money on it.
Our responseWe are glad you found the Clinical Interviews and explanations helpful however, it seems you may be confusing our Guided Discovery Video DVD with some other vendor's product. The reasons we believe this are: it contains Clinical Interviews (not vignettes), is clearly marked as a 44 minute program, and it sells for $64.99 not $29.99. We do have another program on Guided Discovery that sells for $23.79 but that program is 2 hours and 27 minutes long and it is audio only.
